Ban on Single-Use Plastic Cups.

From January 1, 2024, a ban on single-use plastic cups containing more than 15% plastic will be introduced. Read more about the ban here at Tingstad.

Why is the ban being introduced?

The government has decided to implement a ban on cups with more than 15 percent plastic. The decision is based on an overarching effort to reduce the overall consumption of plastic and the impact single-use products have on the environment.

The hope is that the ban will lead to single-use cups on the market consisting as much as possible of renewable raw materials that degrade faster, for example, when littered.

When will the ban on single-use cups with over 15 percent plastic be enforced, and which products are affected?

The ban comes into effect from January 5, 2024, and is specifically directed at single-use cups containing over 15 percent plastic.

The ban is introduced as a complement to the requirement to offer reusable cups, which also takes effect at the same time.

Tingstad already offers several approved single-use cups suitable for both hot and cold beverages.

Questions and Answers

Which products are affected?

All single-use cups containing more than 15% plastic, in simple terms, all transparent single-use cups.

Does the ban apply to all types of plastic?

Yes, the ban also applies to cups made of so-called bio-plastic (PLA) and/or recycled plastic (RPET).

Does the legislation apply in countries other than Sweden?

No, this legislation currently applies only to the Swedish market.

What about plastic yogurt and salad containers?

As a customer, you will still be able to purchase plastic single-use containers sold as food packaging. It's important to note that if you choose to use purchased food containers (intended for foods like yogurt and/or salads) as drinking glasses, you risk a fine during an inspection.
